The problem of the order of the energy levels in Yamasaki's new variational method is investigated. From an example taking Weber functions as trial functions, it is shown that an ordering theorem like that of Mac Donald does not exist for this method. Considerably improved results are obtained by using the eigenfunctions of a more similar potential well as trial functions.
