Abstract
Free-living amoebae such as Acanthamoeba castellanii are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and most soil. They feed on bacteria which are ingested by phagocytosis and digested within food vacuoles. In this typical predator prey relationship bacteria are exposed to selection pressure by grazing of amoebae which caused the development of amoeba resistant bacteria. In this study the influence of the Serratia plymuthica quorum sensing system on its resistance against A. castellanii was investigated and apparently this system affects resistance. Further experiments will try to link this resistance to any of the known quorum sensing-regulated phenotypes.
