Room temperature elastic constants of single crystal U4O9

    Abstract

    The room temperature elastic constants of single crystal U4O9 are measured by using the pulse echo technique: C11 = 3.19 × 1012 d cm-2C12 = 1.21 × 1012 d cm-2C44 = 0.41 × 1012 d cm-2. The lattice energy for both UO2 and U4O9 is calculated from the compressibility; it is shown that the exponent describing the strength of the interatomic potential in the Born model is smaller than the values usually found in the literature.
