title = "SHORT TERM GENETIC AND CELLULAR EFFECTS OF X-IRRADIATION IN GASTRULAS FROM NORMAL AND DNA REPAIR-DEFICIENT MICE",
abstract = "The GEMRATE research performed in Mol was devoted to short term genetic and cellular effects of X-irradiation in gastrulas from normal mice, DNA-repair deficient mice and mice deficient in cell cycle control. Our research included in situ as well as ex situ studies. Part of our work was devoted to the development and optimization of different methods needed for analysing the short term effects of irradiation on the gastrula. This included the collection of the embryos from the uterine crypts and their preparation for cytogenetic or flow cytometric analysis (ex situ studies), but also the immunohistochemical staining of uterine sections for the in situ analysis of apoptosis and cell cycle effects in early postimplanted embryos. The following part of our work consisted in the study of the short term cytogenetic and cellular effects of X-irradiation in mouse wild-type and mutant gastrulas. A third aspect of our research which was not originally foreseen dealt with the role of the DNA-PKcs and P53 genes in the radiation-induced G2-arrest in the BALB/c zygote. These studies were the logical continuation of earlier experiments performed in this field in our laboratory.",
