Abstract
Visualizing a reactor core filled with liquid metal can be very challenging. Due to the opaque and conductive nature of the coolant, electromagnetic and laser-based positioning systems can’t be used. An ultrasonic system might be a solution.
However, the use of ultrasonic signal is also faced with a number of problems, e.g. the specular reflections of the signals instead of the diffuse reflections seen in other media. This puts severe constraints on the signal processing. This paper will research the possibilities and will present a possible solution for building such a system.
