    Abstract

For some applications a 400 Hz power system is more suitable than a lower frequency system, e.g., induction heating, high-speed tooling machines, or gas discharge lighting. 400 Hz electrical power generators are commercially available and are frequently used in military systems and steel induction heating. It is also possible to use a conventional 50/60 Hz generator combined with an electronic frequency converter. A cogeneration system is an ideal way to generate and distribute 400 Hz power. In this paper the generic conditions for a successful application are pointed out. Different, initially possible, applications are reviewed, and critical technical points are discussed. Experimental results on a 400 Watt 400 Hz high pressure sodium lamp are presented. Energy efficiency plays an important role and can be increased depending on the chosen technical solution. A technico-economic trade-off is applied to a case study of artificial lighting in horticultural greenhouses.
