Abstract
A simple and reliable method is presented for the controlled oxidation of UO2 which allows the preparation of single crystals with a composition between UO2 and U4O9 starting from a stoichiometric crystal. The principle of the method is the equilibration of the oxygen dissociation pressures of UO2 and U3O8 heated together in vacuum. The practical applications are shown.
