Abstract

A simple and reliable method is presented for the controlled oxidation of UO₂ which allows the preparation of single crystals with a composition between UO₂ and U₄O₉ starting from a stoichiometric crystal. The principle of the method is the equilibration of the oxygen dissociation pressures of UO₂ and U₃O₈ heated together in vacuum. The practical applications are shown.
