Abstract
The low-lying states of 8Be are studied in three different approximations: the shell model without and with configuration interaction and the projected Hartree-Fock method. The calculation shows that the classification of states in SU(3) bands is destroyed when configuration mixing is taken into account. The configuration interaction calculation gives a clue to understanding the growth of the ground state rotational band in terms of different SU(3) representations.
