    Abstract

The present report has been drafted on request of the Radioactive Waste Management Funding and Research Center – RWMC – Japan and gives an overview and update on the R&D at the HADES Underground Research Facility (URF). This report is largely based upon the SCK•CEN reports R-4149 (May 2005) and ER-13 (May 2006) for RWMC. The HADES URF is the main research facility in Belgium for R&D on the geological disposal of radioactive waste. The report starts with an overview of the main objectives of research performed in the HADES URF and the organizational structure of the Economic Interest Grouping EURIDICE, which is the association in charge of the management of the HADES facility. The report gives a chronological outline of various phases in the development of the HADES URF as well as of the main experiments that have been performed in the Underground Research Facility. Finally, a summary overview is given of the PRACLAY experiment, which is a large scale in situ demonstration experiment investigating the combined effects of excavation and thermal load including impact on the barrier performance of engineered barriers and the Boom Clay.
