Abstract

79Se, 126Sn, 93Zr, and 107Pd are amongst the most critical radionuclides for the long-term safety of geological disposal of vitrified high-level waste or spent fuel in the Boom Clay candidate formation in Belgium. We therefore investigated the leaching behaviour of their inactive isotopes from reference HLW glass SON68, and we determined in particular the steady-state concentrations in near-field conditions of these elements. Some of the most important conclusions of this study are: - release of the radioactive Se, Sn, Pd, Zr from HLW glass does not seem to increase their respective element concentration in the pore solution of a natural Boom Clay environment - the Se (VI) release is not solubility limited, whereas Sn, Pd, Zr are solubility limited
