The reactor point-kinetics equations: semi-analytical methods versus numerical methods

    Research outputpeer-review

    Abstract

A comparison is made between semi-analytical methods and numerical methods for solving the reactor point-kinetics equations. These equations form a set of coupled ordinary differential equations that is very stiff. Semi-analytical methods use the specific structure of the point)kinetics equations to calculate approximate solutions at different points in time, while purely numerical methods are developed to solve any type of set of stiff ODEs. The final conclusion is the recommendation of a specific numerical method to solve these equations since it outperforms all other methods, both in accuracy and in computer time.
