The thermal neutron capture cross section and resonance integral of 227Ac

    Abstract

    Small samples of purified 227Ac, deposited on aluminum foils were irradiated together with 59Co flux monitors in the BR1 reactor. The absolute activity of 228Ac induced in the targets by the irradiation with and without cadmium cover, was measured with a calibrated Ge(Li) gamma spectrometer. Assuming a thermal neutron cross section of 37·4 barn and a resonance integral of 70·0 barn for the reaction 59Co (n, γ) 60+60mCo values of respectively 762±29 barn and 1017 ± 103 barn were obtained. The quoted errors include all systematic and random errors of the procedure.
