Abstract
This master thesis describes the alpha mode technique to simulate basic transients possible to happen in accelerator driven systems. Modal expansion techniques are compared to direct solutions of the neutron transport equations, to estimate the number of alpha modes needed in order to simulate accurately different types of transients. 1D and 2D investigations of basic transients at GUINEVERE have been performed. Alternative methods such as lambda methods and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) have been touched.
