Abstract

This report contributes to the CLAYTRAC project, which has been launched within the Clay Club of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). It provides U and Th analyses on core samples taken from the Essen-1 borehole, which was drilled in Jan-Feb 2006. U and Th profiles in the Boom Clay were needed for calculating radiogenic He production in the Boom Clay. Spectral gamma ray measurements conducted in the open-hole with this end, appeared too high. U and Th analyses on samples were performed to verify this statement and to provide corrected U and Th profiles. Values range from 6 to 12.7 ppm for the Th content and from 1.8 to 4.2 ppm for the U content. These results are further used within the CLAYTRAC project to calculate the He profile and to compare it with the measured He profile in the Boom Clay in Essen. These U and Th analyses and report were financed by NIRAS/ONDRAF.
