Abstract
The α-particle model has been applied to the 20Ne and 24Mg nuclei taking as equilibrium structures a trigonal and tetragonal bipyramid, respectively. The model easily reproduces four of the five low-lying rotational bands in 20Ne, and all low-energy levels with known spin and parity in 24Mg are found in the theoretical spectrum. However, because of the many vibrational degrees of freedom and the small symmetry groups, there are so many rotational bands and undetermined
parameters that the fits become much less significant. More new experimental
levels are needed to test the a-particle predictions.
